On Wednesday, divers placed four cases of Mira Winery's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, inside specially designed cages.
"We will make an initial drop to test a process which we plan to expand on in both quantity and time going forward,” said Mira Winery president Jim Dyke before the trial started. “Making history in Charleston Harbor is not new, but [it's] certainly a first for a Napa Valley winery.”
The wine bottles will be left in the water for three months in a bid to understand the difference between wine aged in bottle on the ocean floor, versus wine aged in bottle in the warehouse.
