I am sure the majority of winemakers in quebec are jubilant over this new tabled Bill. However, we have a very long way to go before it becomes law. It can and most likely will be challenged by the large bottlers who will maker their case that the QC wineries have preferential treatment by not having to pay SAQ margins as this creates a situation of unfair competition.

So, the minister of finance, along with his advisers, are aware of the problem. Will they still push the bill through into law?

The other issue is that now, the AVQ who has spent millions of taxpayer dollars to promote "vins certifies du quebec" an appellation, will likely not be able to use this mark of origin. ONLY non-appellation wines are sold in the grocery chains. And if the AVQ wants to compete, they will have to find ways to reduce their production costs. So this will likely lead to the majority of the wines sold as blended. (85% QC, 15% Int'l).

Not a real victory, but hey its close to X-mas. We all need a little "feel good" politics now and then.
